I was reading some George Monbiot writings about conservation. Monbiot says that "The ecosystem is simply the flow of captured energy between lifeforms". Now this is quite a big, fundamental idea, but I wanted to illustrate the aspect of captured energy. Unlike the lifeforms in Monbiot's ecosystem, these guys are not transferring this flow on to the next link in the food chain; they are passing it back and forth in a perpetual dance.
