Simon PATTERSON「Dazzle Ships」
14 October (Tues) - 14 November (Fri), 2008 graniph Fukuoka Gallery
Displaying an Englishman's first-class wit and humour, the artist Simon Patterson has won many fans here in Japan. In 2003 he completed a large-scale painting installation 'Dazzle Ship' in the lobby of the BBC studio in White City (just outside of London). Modeled after the great European battleships of the First World War this is a display of fanaticism for cinema and the military which is based on his unique idea of 'cinema as battleship'. Patterson describes his vision thus - like the inside of a battleship films are the concentration of a vast array of human life. This 40mx15m work pays homage to the countless behind-the-scenes players of the cinema - special effects experts, stuntmen - who are similar to the camouflage on a battleship. The seven paintings that make up the current exhibition are derived from the process involved in this work. Roentgenwerke
Simon PATTERSON
Born in 1969 in Surrey, England. Graduating from Goldsmith College, he rose to prominence in the late 80s-early 90s as a central figure of the YBA (Young British Artists).
His breakthrough work 'The Big Bear', (a take on the familiar London Underground map) is, along with Damien Hirst's 'Shark in Formaldehyde', recognised as one of the representative works of 90's English Modern Art.
He has exhibited in his home country of England and around the globe - holding seven solo exhibitions in Japan since his 1992 'High Fidelity' in Nagoya. To mark U.K.-Japan 2008, his eighth solo-exhibition is being held at Radium in Tokyo's Nihonbashi Bakuro-cho (until 3 Nov).
